We are very pleased and excited
to announce that Ron Dante of The Archies
will be joining us for Cruisin' 2008!
Pop music fans know Ron Dante as the man who sang lead and was all the background voices for the group The Archies hit song Sugar Sugar. This hit single topped the top 40 charts for weeks and was voted "Song of the Year' in 1969 in an era dominated by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and hard rock.
Ron also was the lead singer for the group The Cuff Links whose hit "Tracy" was top ten in 1969.
In 1965 Dante formed the group The Detergents whose hit "Leader of the Laundromat" was top ten.
Anyone who has ever turned on a radio or TV has heard Ron's voice. It's Dante's voice you hear singing You Deserve A Break Today for McDonalds. His voice was heard in spots for Coca Cola, American Airlines, Budweiser, and Dr. Pepper were all Ron's voice. In the seventies and eighties Ron Dante worked as a producer for Barry Manilow, Cher, Dionne Warwick, Pat Benatar, Ray Charles, and John Denver.
He was the driving force behind Barry Manilow's greatest successes. Their collaboration spawned one hit after another. Ron Dante has produced songs that have become landmarks on the pop music scene including Mandy, I Write the Songs, the Grammy winning Copacabana, and Could It Be Magic?
Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods It was early summer, 1974 - the year of the Watergate scandal, the energy crisis, long lines at the gas station - but in the midst of these national woes, you could turn on your radio at almost any given moment and find some station spinning the infectious tearjeaker "Billy, Don't Be a Hero" by Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods.
Touring in the mid 60's for Dick Clark Productions as an opening act for supergroups like The Rascals, Paul Revere and The Raiders, Box-Tops, Grassroots and Herman's Hermits gave the group enough exposure to garner them a strong following on the live circuit. An opening stint for The Osmond Brothers and appearances on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, and "Action '73" TV shows poised Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods into the right realm for the stardom they would soon achieve.
The first single, "Special Someone", hit the charts in 1972 with another single the following year ABC Records called "Deeper and Deeper". Their next release, "Billy, Don't Be A Hero" was all that was necessary to shoot Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods up to the #1 spot for two weeks, sell more than three million copies and earn a gold record. Four more Top 40 singles followed on its heels: "Who Do You Think You Are," "The Heartbreak Kid," "House on Telegraph Hill", "Our Last Song Together".
Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods and their gold record have been mentioned in Stephen King's book "The Stand" and also in such Television shows as "Get A Life," "ALF," and the NBC hit sitcom "Friends." The song was also used in feature films, most notably, Quentin Tarentino's "Reservoir Dogs", "To Gillian on her 37th Birthday" and in the unique film "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert." VH-1's 8 Track Flashback with Suzanne Somers featured The Heywoods and "Billy, Don't Be A Hero."
Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods currently continue to bring their music to live concerts, nightclubs, casinos, fairs, corporate events and festivals.
The Prunes
Once upon a time, many of us were part of the Prune Juice Follies, a group of over-fifty, but young-at-heart, entertainers. When its founder retired, we wanted to keep entertaining and formed The Tucson Prunes-Take 2. Since then, the Tucson Prunes have continued to grow and added its own singing group, The Prooners.
The Tucson Prunes and Prooners are all over fifty and most will never see sixty again. Although we come from diverse backgrounds, our common bond is entertaining others. We blend singing and dancing with a little comedy to create a unique and memorable show that leaves audiences wanting more.
To date, over 4,000 have enjoyed our shows. We have entertained young and old alike at reunions, conventions, fund raisers, anniversaries, birthday parties, corporate functions, and retirement communities. We’ve also done shows with Western, Holiday or other themes for special occasions.
